The brief to design a centenary chapel in Glasnevin cemetery to commemorate the victims of the 1916 rising
It is intended that the Centenary Chapel will provide a simple contemplative setting for a dignified and celebratory farewell to loved ones whilst commemorating the victims of the 1916 Rising who are buried there.
The proposal suggests that a cherry tree be planted for each of
the 232 victims that lost their lives during the rising. The annual blossoming of the cherry trees at Easter will provide appropriate commemoration of those unknown victims who are buried on the site.
The trees will be arranged in bays that underpin the axial geometry of the site configuration and will provide informal routes for peaceful contemplative walks.
Environment
This is a very simple building and we propose to employ simple low carbon low technology strategies to create the desired internal environment. The tall volumes of the chapel and vestibule are ideally suited to the employment of natural ventilation with intake at low level through the glazed screens and extract at high level through the clerestory glazing. The incorporation of underfloor heating within the stone floor will provide a comfortable temperature at the requisite level within the tall volume of the chapel whilst secondary spaces to the perimeter will be served by simple LPHW radiators.
