The brief to design a centenary chapel in Glasnevin cemetery to commemorate the victims of the 1916 rising

It is intended that the Centenary Chapel will provide a simple contemplative setting for a dignified and celebratory farewell to loved ones whilst commemorating the victims of the 1916 Rising who are buried there.

The proposal suggests that a cherry tree be planted for each of the 232 victims that lost their lives during the rising. The annual blossoming of the cherry trees at Easter will provide appropriate commemoration of those unknown victims who are buried on the site. The trees will be arranged in bays which underpin the axial geometry of the site configuration and will provide informal routes for peaceful contemplative walks.
